In The Kite Runner Assef shown as a rude person. For example when he saw Amir and Hassan the first thing he said was, "Good morning, kunis!"(Hosseini 5.42) Kunis is a very suggestive term for homosexual. He also greeted him by saying, "Hey, Flat-Nose."(hosseini 5.42)These were very insulting to Hassan.  Assef is also shown as wicked. This is shown when he was talking to Amir abot the things he had done. He said, "Door to door we went, calling for the men and the boys. We'd shoot them right there infront of their families."(Hosseini 22.290) He claims it was to, "Let them remember who they were, where they belonged." (Hosseini 22.290) Lastly Assef was shown as a crazy man even a lunatic. Before he became a Taliban a group oh Parchami soldiers went into his house and ordered his father and himself at gunpoint. He was then shoved in a cell and one of the guards picked to beat him really horribly. It was so bad he past a kidney stone. A few years later Assef had seen the guard that beat him up.  He was in a trench bleeding to death then Assef said, "I told him the same thing I told you, that I never forget a face. Then I shot him in the balls."(Hosseini 22.297) Assef even risked his life. He was so willing to fight Amir that he told his guards, "No matter what you, don't come in!"(Hosseini 22.300) He could have died but he had so much self confidence he would win.
